THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
Artisan Organization: Kantinan
Country: Thailand
"Hi! Kantinan Dorkdang is my name; you can call me 'Aew.' I grew up in Chiang Mai, near Baan Tawai Village. My father has been selling old wood since I was a child, so I've grown up around woodwork and am familiar with trading.
"In Chiang Mai, where I met my best friend, I decided to major in Business Administration. She is a Chinese student who came to study Thai and now resides here. We decided in 2007 to create a little shop in Baan Tawai using my woodworking experience and her artistic sense. Our shop has increased significantly thanks to her ability to find customers.
"I began purchasing natural wood and selling it. We discovered a mango wood design. My devoted customers ordered me to produce it.
"Generally, I hire a group of artisans to create each product line; they all live in Chiang Mai. During COVID, shops in the area of Baan Tawai gradually closed down, and no consumers came to my shop. Fortunately, my customers in China continue to request products that I provide for export, but my shop is still experiencing supply issues.
"I'm now the only salesperson at the shop, and a housekeeper comes in twice a week. However, if I have a large order to pack, I hire a part-time employee to assist me because I must QC each item. If visitors return, I'll need to recruit a full-time salesperson.
"If the economy improves and more tourists visit, I would like to open a larger main shop than I currently have. Throughout my dream journey, I hope Novica will be a terrific way to promote our Thai crafts. Thank you very much." "
