THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Matr Boomie

Country: India

Meet Prajapati. He is a seasoned master blue potter with 45 years of experience, who works in our partner blue pottery studio in India leading a team of 15 artisans! Pottery is an age-old art in India. Artisans use a potter’s wheel, handmade mold, or their hands to shape natural clay into beautiful pieces of art. The pottery of Rajasthan includes various ancient forms, from rustic Terracotta to the delicately painted Blue Pottery of Jaipur. Pottery is considered to be a mystical trade because it incorporates five vital elements: air, fire, earth, water, and ether. The craft of blue pottery has been passed down for generations in Rajasthan.

Matr Boomie currently partners with two groups, consisting of a combined 55 artisans. Both of these groups are from rural areas that are well connected to urban markets by highway. The Blue Pottery group uses advanced techniques to glaze and fire pottery at high temperatures reaching 850 degrees celsius. Their geometric designs are inspired by regional flora and fauna. Their Terracotta co-operative partners carry on an ancient legacy. This art dates back all the way to Bronze Age to the Indus Valley civilization. If these pieces could speak, they would have many a tale to tell!
