THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Lilit Vagharshyan

Country: Armenia

"I’m Lilit Vagharshayn, and I’ve been drawn to art for as long as I can remember. I often get asked how I decided to become an artist, and my answer always goes back to my roots: I was born in 1978 into a creative and supportive family. My mother and grandparents, all of whom appreciated the arts, encouraged my passion from an early age, nurturing my creative spirit and laying the foundation for my artistic journey.

"In 1998, it felt natural to apply to the Academy of Fine Arts in Yerevan, where I could pursue formal training. My time at the academy was transformative. I delved into the world of printmaking and discovered a love for various techniques like etching, monotype, linocut, and drypoint. It was in drypoint that I found my true artistic voice; the technique resonated with me, allowing me to express both the fine details and the expressive depth I was searching for. To this day, drypoint remains my favorite medium, and I find endless inspiration in its textures and nuances.

"Beyond my love for printmaking, I have been fortunate to exhibit my work in numerous group exhibitions around the world. These experiences have broadened my perspective, connecting me with artists and art enthusiasts from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Having my art recognized on an international scale has been both humbling and inspiring, and it constantly drives me to push my creative boundaries. I have also had the privilege of holding two personal exhibitions in Yerevan, where I could share my work more intimately with an audience and receive direct feedback and inspiration from my local community.

"In addition to printmaking, I have explored other artistic avenues, particularly in children’s book illustration and animation. Working as an illustrator has been a rewarding experience, as it allows me to bring stories to life for young readers. There’s something magical about creating images that ignite children’s imaginations, and I am always excited by the challenge of capturing a story’s essence through art. My work in animation has also been a wonderful journey, especially in character and background design. Animation is a collaborative and dynamic field, and I enjoy being part of a team that creates immersive worlds and engaging characters.

"Every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to create and to share my work with others. My goal is to continue exploring new ideas and techniques, embracing the challenges that come with each artistic pursuit. I am dedicated to growing as an artist and to honoring the heritage of Armenian art through my creations. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I hope my work resonates with you and brings a piece of Armenia’s artistic soul into your life.""
