THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Ruben and Arpine

Country: Armenia

"I’m Arpine Gishyan, born in 1978 in the picturesque town of Noyemberyan, Armenia. My journey into pottery began in 2001 when I married into a family deeply rooted in the craft. My husband’s family has been shaping and molding clay since the 1970s, and they were among the first in Yerevan to introduce clay souvenirs, which have now become a beloved part of Armenian culture. The iconic clay pomegranate, a symbol of prosperity and cultural heritage, was first crafted by my husband’s father, Ruben Stepanyan, a man known for his dedication to preserving Armenian artistry through clay.

"My husband, Mihran, and I took on the family legacy, working side-by-side to develop our own distinctive style within the ancient art of Armenian pottery. Together, we created our studio, ArmCeramics, dedicated to fusing Armenian decorative art with clay, preserving and revitalizing Armenian traditions. Our work combines pottery, miniature painting, and sculpture, drawing from various branches of Armenian art and culture. For us, our studio is more than a brand—it’s a mission to keep Armenian heritage alive and share its beauty with the world.

"In 2004, our son was born, bringing a new generation into our world of clay and creativity. From a young age, Ruben was surrounded by the tools and materials of our work; clay became his toy, and he began to feel a natural affinity for it. Watching him play and experiment, we saw how his curiosity and interest blossomed into genuine skill and love for pottery. By 2016, when he was only 12, Ruben had his first significant experience in the craft: he was invited to participate in the annual Haghartsin event, where he conducted his very first pottery master class. Seeing him engage and inspire others with his skills at such a young age was truly fulfilling, and it reinforced that our family’s legacy was in safe hands.

"Today, Ruben continues to be an integral part of our family’s artistic journey. He brings his unique perspective, innovative ideas, and youthful energy to our work, which complements the traditional knowledge and techniques passed down through generations. He is proud to carry on the family’s legacy, and together, our family is devoted to creating art that speaks to the spirit of Armenia and the timelessness of Armenian craftsmanship.

"Through our pottery, we honor our culture, heritage, and family. Each piece we create reflects the love and respect we have for our roots, capturing the warmth, vibrancy, and history of Armenian art. For us, pottery is not only a way to express ourselves but also a bridge to connect with others and share the beauty of Armenian culture with the world.""
