THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
Artisan Organization: Jevo
Country: Armenia
"I am Mamikon and my twin brother is Ashot. Together we are known as Jevo, artists-sculptors and jewelry makers from Gyumri. We have been creating since 2011. Our journey into jewelry making began when we decided to expand our skills in sculpting and painting. We received positive feedback and our creations became recognized. This led us to the idea of opening a studio where our works of art could be displayed.
"Our mission became spreading the Armenian spirit and art across the world. All of our pieces carry the idea of presenting Armenia's historical and cultural values in a new and innovative way. Each piece of jewelry is original and crafted entirely by hand, from start to finish. We refuse to impose limits on ourselves, both in terms of materials and themes, allowing us to create freely in response to the call of our hearts.
"While preserving the traditional techniques of silversmithing and jewelry making, we also enjoy experimenting with new methods. One such technique is the Chekanka technique (repousse), which we incorporate into our jewelry. Our primary materials include silver, brass, copper, melchior alloy, natural stones, and natural wood. We personally process all metals and create alloys for our jewelry.
"Difficulties arise at various stages, from rising rental fees to challenges with heating during winter months. However, we strive to overcome these obstacles and preserve our creations while continuously seeking new avenues of development. It is important to acknowledge that global crises significantly impact our production. During and after wartime, it becomes challenging to engage a wider audience in the realm of art. As creators, we are constantly exploring new avenues of creativity in response to these circumstances.
"In 2020, we established an exhibition hall in the heart of Gyumri, creating job opportunities and serving as a platform for emerging artists. This exhibition hall holds great importance for the development of tourism in Gyumri. Additionally, our organization contributes to a strong connection between the community and culture, engaging both tourists and locals through master classes.
"One of our short-term goals is to foster increased cooperation and expand the reach of our art to other countries. We also aim to promote culture and enhance the number of master classes and artist meetings. Our long-term goal and dream is to establish our own educational studio, accommodating a small number of students who can create alongside us. We aspire to pass on our craft and art to future generations."
