THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Vardan Yengibaryan
Country: Armenia
"I’m Vardan Yengibaryan, born in 1979, in the scenic town of Dilijan, Armenia. Growing up, I moved to Yerevan with my family, where I attended secondary school. My childhood was filled with inspiration, especially from my older brother Sasun, who was a dedicated artist and craftsman. His passion for woodwork and carving became the cornerstone of my artistic journey.
"In 1996, I enrolled in the Armenian Engineering University, where I studied materials science, gaining the technical knowledge that would later help me understand the intricacies of working with different materials. I graduated in 1999, shortly before serving in the Armed Forces from 1999 to 2001. My time in the military instilled in me a sense of discipline and perseverance, qualities that I would later bring to my craft as an artisan.
"After completing my service, I took my first steps into the world of furniture making, a field that allowed me to work with wood and further develop my skills. I found myself captivated by the art of wood carving, and my brother Sasun was there every step of the way, sharing his knowledge and guiding me through the techniques that made his work so distinctive.
"My work is entirely handmade, crafted from carefully selected wood varieties that bring out the uniqueness in each piece. I believe that art must evolve while staying true to its roots, so I strive to keep Armenian traditions alive in my designs while introducing fresh ideas that reflect modern sensibilities. Each piece I create tells a story, a blend of my brother’s vision and my personal journey as an artist.
"Woodworking has become more than just a profession for me—it’s a way of life that supports my family, including my parents, my wife, our two daughters, and our son. Knowing that each piece I create helps sustain my family makes my work all the more meaningful. Wood carving is a challenging art, but it is immensely rewarding. Every finished piece feels like an accomplishment, and the joy of seeing others appreciate and connect with my work is unparalleled.
"As I continue on this path, I am excited to share my work with a broader audience. My hope is that through my carvings, others can feel the warmth, tradition, and dedication that go into every detail. Thank you for allowing me to share a piece of my heritage, and I look forward to bringing a touch of Armenian craftsmanship into your lives.""
