THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Karine and Gohar Matosyan
Country: Armenia
"We are Karine and Gohar Matosyan, born in the city of Lorva Alaverdi, a place that carries the essence of Armenian heritage. Growing up on the Sanahin Plateau, we were deeply rooted in a family that cherished education, art, and culture. Our parents, who valued a well-rounded development, made every effort to ensure that we received the best education and opportunities to explore our creative sides.
"I, Gohar, pursued a degree in chemistry at Yerevan State University, while my sister Karine studied history and the fundamentals of law at the same university. Our academic paths were diverse, but our childhood was united by a shared passion for music, dance, and the arts. Our home was filled with creativity, largely influenced by our parents. Our mother had a deep love for art, especially theater, which she passed on to us. Our father, a man of many talents, would sing, tell stories, and draw with a pencil—his favorite subject being a dove. I often watched him, captivated by the simplicity and beauty of his drawings. It was this image of the dove that I later began to develop and incorporate into our scarves.
"Our journey into the world of batik and scarf-making began during one of the most challenging periods of our lives. As our children finished school and entered new phases in their lives, both Karine and I faced a sudden professional crisis. The factory, where I worked as a chemist and Karine as a lawyer, was closed. This unexpected turn of events left us searching for new directions and opportunities. It was during this time that we had a chance encounter with a former student friend. She introduced us to the art of creating scarves and offered us an opportunity to collaborate. We began by helping her with sketches, translating our love for painting onto cloth. This new venture allowed us to rekindle our passion for art and provided us with the skills needed to work with fabric. As we honed our craft, we decided to turn our passion into a source of income for our families.
"Each of our scarves tells a story, filled with its own unique energy, music, and love. They are not just pieces of fabric but artistic expressions that carry with them the unrepeatable impressions of music and sketches. Every scarf we create is a tribute to our heritage, our family, and the journey we have taken together. We aim to share a piece of our history, our creativity, and our love with the world, one scarf at a time.""
