Description

Handwoven by artisans in Kenya, each basket is uniquely handmade from the sisal fibers of the cactus plant. Sisal is an environmentally friendly fiber, as it is biodegradable and almost no pesticides or fertilizers are used in its cultivation. The sisal is intricately wrapped around grass or banana leaves, creating these unique and colorful baskets.

This wide, handwoven basket is a great statement piece in your home and also functional (ideal for holding jewelry, keys, or fruit - a perfectly stylish catchall!).

Hanging Instructions: A loop is sewn into the basket for hanging or simply use a tack or nail directly through the sisal; they are reversible and can be hung either way for a different look. These make great wall decor hung alone or in a collection. Mix and match designs for a unique decor pop!

  • Measures: approx. 12.5" in diameter.
  • Color: Natural, Black.
  • Each basket is uniquely different, with no two exactly alike. Please expect color variations from the images.
  • Handmade by artisans in Kenya.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Gitzelli

Country: Ghana

"The Gitzelli artisans work in Kenya and Ghana to weave beautiful, traditional baskets in many designs and colors. Artisans live in low income areas and make their living off selling their crafts or taking daily temporary labor for minimum wage. In Kenya, the artisans come from wide parts of the country. Most weavers come from the Eastern region where the climate is dry and conducive to the production of the sisal -- this is their main source of income. In Central Kenya, most artisans have small pieces of land where they practice subsistence farming. They subsidize their income through weaving products with banana leaf. Gitzelli Imports has helped connect these artisans to bigger markets and enhance their low income."
