THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
Artisan Organization: Mansur Xamidov
Country: Silk Road
"My name is Mansur Xamidov, and I am honored to share my journey as a weaver with all of you. Born in Fergana in 1960, I grew up in a family of nine siblings (8 boys and 1 girl), surrounded by an environment that nurtured our individual passions and interests.
"It was during my teenage years that I stumbled upon a book that would change my life forever - Household Encyclopedia. This book introduced me to a section on weaving, which captivated my interest from the very beginning. I eagerly delved into the intricate details, absorbing every word about the art of creating beautiful textiles.
"As fate would have it, my path crossed with a woman who possessed an undeniable talent for knitting. Entranced by her mesmerizing hand movements, I was compelled to inquire about the thread she was using. It turned out to be the extraordinary cashmere wool which she passionately described for its numerous benefits to the human body. My curiosity was ignited, and I quickly realized that not all goat wool possesses the same remarkable qualities. Opting to work primarily with wool from mountain goats, I discovered that their fibers absorbed color exceptionally well, resulting in a breathtaking shine.
"Though my original profession was that of a driver, I sought to provide better for my family, for whom I aimed to always excel. Thus, I embarked on the path of a weaver, simultaneously balancing my roles. I recognize that traditionally, weaving has been associated primarily with women, but that did not deter me. For 40 years, I have wholeheartedly embraced this industry and take immense pride in being a male weaver.
"Today, I cannot imagine my life without knitting. It has become an essential part of who I am, with my work equipment always close at hand. I knit tirelessly, even engaging in conversations during taxi rides or fair visits to Tashkent. A deep commitment to quality drives my process, as I firmly believe that I must first love what I create before presenting it to the world. This unwavering dedication to excellence has garnered the love and appreciation of my customers.
"However, my aspirations reach far beyond my personal success. My dream is to establish a goat wool carpet factory, an endeavor that would provide opportunities for others who share a passion for this craft. Selecting individuals from the village where I reside, I aim to choose those who genuinely possess an interest in this field. Weaving is an art that demands not only love but also profound patience, making it essential for those involved to possess a genuine fondness for this profession.
"In conclusion, I am immensely grateful for the support and encouragement I have received throughout my journey as a weaver. With every creation I painstakingly produce, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and admiration, inviting others to appreciate the beauty and artistry of goat wool textiles. Together, let us celebrate the intricate interplay between passion and craftsmanship, weaving a tapestry of creativity that will endure for generations to come.""
