THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Danicxia Castillo
Country: India
"My journey as an artisan has been a vibrant tapestry of life experiences, filled with an unwavering passion for creating beautiful handcrafted pieces.
"During my early childhood with my loving family, we shared good times and also faced challenges. When my parents separated, I stayed with my dad, while my younger brother remained with my mom. Despite being apart, we maintain a strong, beautiful bond to this day. My father was always clowning around, bringing laughter and joy to people’s lives; and my mother had a knack for crafting, particularly piñatas and decorations, but she didn't fully explore her artistic side.
"The most challenging times I have ever faced were my parents' separation and my father's battle with alcoholism. Those experiences can be perplexing to any young person, but today, I understand the complexities of those experiences, and have learned to forgive.
"My artisan journey began in 2017, when I attended a macrame workshop on a day off from my job as a wildlife guide. Even though I remember making a not-so-pretty bracelet, that day ignited the spark to begin creating. I bought my first spools of thread, and started making bracelets.
"Friends and family were the first ones to buy my creations, which motivated me to keep going. I've never stopped since. My creative spirit, sensitivity and unstoppable drive have fueled my journey. Costa Rican crafts are a reflection of our rich culture, and I take pride in being part of that tradition.
"My art has been mostly self-taught, and I've taught a few people myself, particularly children. I adore knotting. Some might find it boring, but it keeps me entertained, and also heals me. I've spent countless hours perfecting my work, often unraveling threads time and time again until the desired results are achieved. Throughout this journey, it's been just me, designing and crafting with no external help, working with just a clamp and a table.
"I find inspiration in the freedom of doing what I love, and not having to work on something that doesn’t bring me joy. But it’s the customers who appreciate my art what really keeps me going.
"I am currently focused on chasing my dream of dedicating myself 100 percent to crafting, and traveling to different places to showcase my creations. It is already coming true thanks to Novica and Procomer – the organization that promotes the export of Costa Rican goods and services. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has trusted and supported my work. Thank you for being part of my artisan journey." "
