THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT
Artisan Organization: Ricardo González
Country: Central America
"My name is Ricardo Gonz√°lez and I was born in 1981 in Antigua Guatemala. Ever since I was little, I have liked to draw and paint. I remember my mother had a talent for crafts, which partly inspired me to start. At university I took some courses that were related to art. While I was studying, I kept thinking about painting and pursuing my dreams of creating works of art.
"About 12 years ago, I started painting while working at a miniature ceramic workshop in Antigua. There, I focused on painting ceramic pieces with Guatemalan motifs like the white nun orchid. I then began working directly on canvases. Starting in the art world was challenging. Over time, after practicing and making many mistakes, I managed to perfect my technique. Every day, I continue to discover new things that I can do. Along the way, I realized that this art could provide income for my household, and I have been doing it for years. Selling my first paintings was difficult, but gradually, I established my work.
"Over the years, I have continued to perfect and learn more about the oil technique because I love art and what I do. I have diversified my products, not only limiting myself to paintings but also creating items like bracelets, miniature paintings, and home decorations using oil painting applications.
"Unfortunately, there is little support for artists in the country, but we are making progress. Times have changed, and one must believe in oneself and dare to try new things to stand out from others.
"I am grateful to NOVICA and its customers for acquiring my works. Each painting I create reflects the beauty, culture, and traditions of Guatemala.""
