THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Svetlana Shihova

Country: Silk Road

"My name is Svetlana Shihova and I once had the privilege of working at the Fergana City Art Foundation, where I immersed myself in the world of art as a designer. It was a transformative experience that set the stage for my journey as a bag designer, a path I've walked on my own, with my family playing a significant role in my creative venture.

"My fascination with the world of textiles began in 2003, and the skills I honed during my time at the art foundation were instrumental in shaping my artistic identity. While there, I had the opportunity to participate in numerous international and national exhibitions, which broadened my horizons and allowed me to showcase my talents. In 2020, I reached a new milestone by becoming a member of the Union of Artists, a recognition of my dedication to the craft and my commitment to the artistry of design.

"My bag designs are a reflection of modern applied art, a fusion of innovation and tradition. Throughout my journey, I've had the privilege of pioneering innovative techniques in the realm of quilted batik and batik appliqué, pushing the boundaries of what's possible with these age-old practices.

"My creative business has always been a family affair, where my loved ones play a significant role. Art flows through our family's veins, and each member has a unique contribution to our creative venture. It's a labor of love that brings us together and allows us to infuse our passion into every piece we create.

"The most fulfilling aspect of my work is the warmth and joy my products bring to those who purchase them. I take pride in using traditional, locally produced fabrics, including excelsior, bekasam, shoyi, adras, and more, all skillfully crafted by Uzbek artisans. These fabrics, primarily sourced from the city of Margilan, serve as the canvas for my bag designs, each piece a testament to the rich cultural heritage of our region.

"What sets my bags apart is their unique style, design, and unwavering commitment to quality. I believe that art should be not only visually appealing but also deeply meaningful, and this philosophy guides my creative process.

"As I reflect on my artistic journey, I remain filled with aspiration. I look forward to participating in international and local exhibitions, sharing my designs with a wider audience, and learning from other masters of the craft. These events are not only opportunities to showcase my work but also to connect with fellow artisans and continue my growth as a designer and an individual.

"While I may have moved on from my days at the Fergana City Art Foundation, the experience and knowledge I gained there continue to inspire my artistic endeavors. My family remains an essential part of my business, and together, we are excited to see where this creative journey takes us next.""
