Nature dresses itself in golden hues when autumn arrives in the Armenian region. Known as the harvesting season, those windy days create a warm scene that artist Erik Alaverdyan captures with oil in an impressionist composition. THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Erik Alaverdyan

Country: Armenia

"My name is Erik Alaverdyan, and I was born in 1964 in the vibrant city of Artsakh. My journey has been deeply connected to the arts, education, and community engagement—a path that has shaped me both as an artist and as an educator. My early years were spent in Artsakh, where I completed my primary and secondary education at the M. Manvelyan secondary school, graduating in 1981. The school fostered in me a love for learning and introduced me to the discipline of working diligently toward my passions.

"From 1982 to 1986, I pursued my higher education at Stepanakert Agricultural University, where I specialized in agronomy through their part-time department. While my studies there were focused on agricultural sciences, I always held a special passion for the arts and folk traditions. I believed in finding harmony between nature and creativity, and I would later carry this duality into my work. Soon, my interests guided me toward an institution that would allow me to fully immerse myself in art.

"In 1990, I graduated from the Moscow School of Folk Arts, an experience that was pivotal for my artistic development. There, I encountered diverse techniques, perspectives, and the rich traditions of folk art that opened new dimensions for my creativity. Folk art, with its deep cultural roots and expressive style, spoke to my desire to create works that reflect the world around me. I learned to use art as a medium to capture the spirit of our cultural heritage, and it became a guiding force in my life.

"In 2004, I moved to Hadrut, where I began working as a child and youth worker at the local creative center. Here, I took on the role of leading the drawing group, a position that has allowed me to share my love for art with the younger generation. Working with children and young adults has brought immense joy and fulfillment to my life. It is one thing to create art and another to teach it—through my teaching, I feel I am passing on not only skills but also values of patience, expression, and respect for tradition. The students inspire me every day, reminding me of the importance of nurturing creativity and self-expression from a young age.

"Family is an essential part of my life. I am happily married and have four children, all of whom bring joy and inspiration to my days. Balancing family life with my passion for art and teaching has been a rewarding challenge. My family understands and supports my dedication to both my art and my role as an educator. Each member of my family has witnessed the transformative power of creativity, and we share a collective respect for art in all its forms.

"Today, my work continues to evolve as I integrate my personal experiences, cultural heritage, and the inspirations I draw from teaching young artists. I am proud of my journey and grateful for the opportunity to share my art with a broader audience. Through my work, I hope to convey the beauty and resilience of Armenian culture, and to connect with others who appreciate the unique stories embedded in folk art.""
