Tejedoras de San Jorge la Laguna
Artisan Organization: Tejedoras de San Jorge la Laguna
Country: Central America
"I'm Gloria, and I lead the Tejedoras de San Jorge La Laguna, a group of dedicated artisans. Our journey began in 2012 when fate brought us together in Panajachel. We met through a foundation that extends a helping hand to those in need. My fellow artisans showcased their talents, and that's when our creative bond was woven.
"From then on, every month, we diligently create products requested by the foundation. When we first embarked on this artisanal adventure, my children were just little ones. It was with the support of our group and the regular income that we ensured our kids continued their education.
"Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we've been fortunate to keep working. However, when international travel came to a halt, our orders diminished, leaving us in a tough spot. Some of my fellow artisans even used this time to improve their living conditions.
"In our group, there's Teresa, Estela, Inés, María Concepción, Lucía, and me, Gloria. Two of us are over 50 years old, while I am 46.
"We source our own materials, including yarn and other supplies, and I divide the work among us. Crafting one beautiful scarf takes us two days, while a shawl requires three.
"Our artisan skills have been passed down through generations, learned from our mothers. The economic impact of the pandemic has been significant. While our husbands work hard, their earnings are limited. Thus, we need to work and contribute to our families' finances, especially with the rising costs of living over the past year.
"To our customers who appreciate our work, we ask for your support, as it makes a significant difference for seven families. We truly hope to expand our group, as many women in San Jorge lack employment opportunities. The local economy in San Jorge la Laguna faces its own challenges, making artisanal work a crucial lifeline for us.
"Your support and appreciation for our craft not only enrich our lives but also strengthen our community. Thank you for being a part of our journey.""
