"I'm Marie Dextre, born in Lima, Peru, in 1978, and I want to share my story with you. I grew up in a bustling city but later found my path in the world of art and craftsmanship in a rather unexpected way.
"My journey started as a fashion designer, working with various talents in the creative industry. However, in 2015, a twist of fate led me to explore the world of crafts and textiles. I began working with women artisans, and with each experience shared, my connection to craftsmanship grew stronger. It was during a product development project in Ucayali that I had a profound encounter with the Shipibo women's lifestyle and traditions, which inspired me to delve deeper into this fascinating world.
"What truly fascinates me about craftsmanship is the creative process itself – the intricate steps of dyeing, spinning, and creating unique textiles. Immersing myself in the Shipibo community for a year allowed me to understand the beauty and complexity of their ancestral techniques. My inspiration comes from various sources. At first, my designs were guided by Ayahuasca ceremonies, evoking the Ayahuasca flower and its profound meanings. The rich landscapes of Lambayeque also find their reflection in my works, inspiring me to create pieces that capture the essence of the land itself.
"In 2020, I embraced autonomy and decided to start my own personal project, mainly due to pandemic restrictions. This was not only a response to the challenges but also an opportunity to weave my own creative narrative.
"While I handle the design, collaboration with artisans is a crucial aspect of my work. I look beyond technical skill, valuing the use of natural threads, sustainability in the production processes, and, above all, creativity. I encourage freedom of intervention in the work, allowing each artisan to contribute their unique perspective to each creation.
"My workshop and art have become a source of empowerment for my community. Beyond the pieces themselves, my focus is on continuous training. I am dedicated to uplifting artisans, providing them with the tools to develop their products and ensure quality in production. My goal is to empower them not only economically but also artistically, creating a cycle of mutual growth. Fair pricing and negotiations are a priority, ensuring that communities also benefit from their hard work.
"My journey is a reminder of how commitment, creativity, and empathy can merge to create a lasting impact. From my roots in Lima to the Shipibo communities, my path reflects the cultural richness and intrinsic beauty of Peru. Through my art, I weave not only textiles but also human connections, uniting people and traditions in an embrace of inspiration and empowerment.""
