Irina Sargsyan

Artisan Organization: Irina Sargsyan

Country: Armenia

"I am Irina Sargsyan, and I was born in the charming city of Hadrut, nestled within the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR). My childhood was filled with the rich history and vibrant culture of my homeland. Growing up in Hadrut, I was surrounded by a close-knit community that valued tradition, craftsmanship, and resilience.

"In 2000, I embarked on an academic journey that would shape my future by entering the State University of Artsakh. My time at the university was transformative, as it allowed me to delve into various fields of study and discover my passions. Among the many subjects I explored, leatherwork stood out as a fascinating and unique world. The intricate processes of crafting leather goods captivated me, and I found immense joy in creating beautiful and functional items with my hands. Leatherwork became more than just a hobby; it was a form of expression and a way to connect with my heritage. I spent countless hours experimenting with different techniques, learning from experienced artisans, and honing my skills. The tactile nature of working with leather, the smell of the material, and the satisfaction of seeing a finished piece all contributed to my growing love for this craft.

"However, life took an unexpected turn in 2023. The political turmoil and conflict in Artsakh led to the forced deportation. Leaving behind the familiar landscapes and the home I had known for so long was a heart-wrenching experience. The move to Armenia was challenging, filled with uncertainty and a sense of loss. But it also marked a new beginning and an opportunity to rebuild our lives. In Armenia, I decided to turn my passion for leatherwork into a profession. It was a daunting task, but I was determined to make it work. The rich tradition of Armenian craftsmanship provided a supportive backdrop for my endeavors. I started small, creating leather accessories and showcasing them at local markets and online platforms. The positive feedback and encouragement I received from customers and fellow artisans fueled my motivation.

"Establishing my own workshop was a dream come true. I transformed a modest space into a creative haven where I could immerse myself in the art of leatherwork. Every piece I crafted told a story, reflecting not only my personal journey but also the resilience and spirit of my people. I focused on producing high-quality, handcrafted items that combined traditional techniques with modern designs. From wallets and belts to bags and custom orders, each creation was a labor of love.

"Running a business came with its own set of challenges. Navigating the complexities of the market, sourcing quality materials, and managing finances required perseverance and adaptability. But the sense of fulfillment I derived from my work made every obstacle worthwhile. I was not just making products; I was preserving a piece of cultural heritage and sharing it with the world.

"As my business grew, I also sought to give back to the community that had supported me. I began offering workshops and training sessions for aspiring artisans, especially those displaced by the conflict. It was a way to pass on the knowledge and skills I had acquired and to empower others to find their own paths in the world of craftsmanship. Seeing others succeed and thrive brought me immense joy and reinforced my belief in the power of creativity and resilience.

"Looking back, my journey from Hadrut to Armenia has been marked by both hardships and triumphs. The forced displacement was a profound upheaval, but it also became a catalyst for personal and professional growth. Through leatherwork, I found a way to heal, to connect with my roots, and to build a future filled with hope and possibility.

"Today, I continue to push the boundaries of my craft, exploring new designs and techniques while staying true to the essence of traditional leatherwork. Every piece I create is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Armenian people and a tribute to the rich cultural heritage that shapes our identity. My story is one of resilience, creativity, and the unwavering belief that even in the face of adversity, we can find beauty and purpose in our passions.""
