With eyes closed, a beautiful mermaid holds her palms together at the level of her heart. Yoga fans will recognize her pose as the namaste, or 'greeting pose.' Made Tresna carves the image from Balinese suar wood, detailing the lovely features while exalting the natural wood grain.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Made Tresna

Country: Bali and Java

"My name is Made Tresna, and I'm from Ubud, Bali. I grew up in an artistic environment - I was always in touch with many artists and artisans everyday. For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with woodcarving, an art form I have been practicing since childhood. My father taught me, and he is one of senior carvers in my village.

"I carved wood statuettes for some time, until I realized there were many people in my village doing the same themes. Searching for something new and different to carve, I realized I enjoyed carving masks in a more contemporary style. My favorite piece is a mask with four faces that I designed as symbol of a Balinese family. I named the mask 'Wayan, Made, Nyoman, and Ketut' – these are traditional Balinese names to refer to the first, second, third, and forth child born.

"In 1989 I married Wayan Lungid and now we have two children. I work hard to make a living and also to provide my children's education.""
