THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Shalabh
Country:
"I come from the magical world of embroidery in Lucknow. The capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow is renowned for it exquisite chikankari embroidery work, so the technique and workmanship of most of my designs are inspired by our traditional embroidery art. But my motifs and style take their inspiration from many different walks of life.
"My designs are youthful and unique. I love every bit of my work. The challenges, effort and victories are what keep me going.
"Since I was a child, I've had an affinity for the intricacy and detail of hand work and this is what inspired me to take up designing. India has a rich tradition of textile and embroidery work and I wanted to showcase our art to the world. It was really challenging to start out on my own but my determination kept me going and, since 2000, I have successfully created apparel with my own label.
"I have a small group of people helping me, depending on the work demand, and we make a great team. We're always helping each other grow. My wife also helps me in my work. Every day is a learning experience and I have learned so much from my daily work. Over the years, I believe I have become a more sensible and mature person.
"We work mostly with cotton voile, cambric and crepe, which are difficult fabrics as they are very delicate. So, I would say, it's not an art which is all that easy. It needs a lot of dedication and determination.""
