Grinning calacas, or 'skulls' represent Mexico's Day of the Dead rituals while sombreros and chili peppers repeat the Mexican theme. They adorn a set of two ceramic ornaments in vibrant orange and brown. Crafted and painted by hand, the pair is polished to a sheen and receives a protective coat of lacquer. Juan Murguia celebrates his heritage with this delightful design.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PRODUCT

Artisan Organization: Juan Murguia

Country: Mexico

"I was born in the beautiful region of Tonala, Jalisco, the artisanal capital of Tapatia. Ever since I was a child, I worked in pottery, since my family worked in this field. And our region is very well-known for this craft.

"I owe everything I know to my uncle, who showed me the secrets of this beautiful craft. One of the facets that I enjoy the most about my work is achieving superior quality with each new piece.

"We work with ceramic in powder diluted with water to achieve a paste that allows us to create any kind of piece. We treat the ceramic with a damp sponge to make it smooth. Afterward, we decorate it with enamels.

"I am greatly inspired by the traditions of the area of Mexico where I live. I love the village air and traditions in which many families have placed their faith and strength. I love that my family is a part of this, and we support each other, making our designs into a reality.

"Each member of my family has a specific role. Starting out was a challenge that has allowed us to discover our creativity. Above all, it has allowed us to keep this tradition alive and share my uncle’s knowledge with more people.

"Remaining active has been one of our greatest tools, since it taught us the value of tenacity. As artisans, this is the key to success in our work.

"We have always been in search of more sales channels, and when we met NOVICA, we liked the concept very much. We want to grow through you and share this beautiful and distinguished art with more people." "
